Confusion for more than 2,000 Kynect customers

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - A miscalculation by the Kynect healthcare company is causing some confusion for more than 2,000 customers.

The cost that customers are paying out of pocket is dramatically different than what they were expecting.

Carrie Banahan of the Office of Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange says, "This impacted individuals who selected the silver plan, and we have about nine silver plans that are offered on the exchange and it affected those nine plans offered."

If you happen to be one of the 2,000 people who enrolled in the silver plan through Kynect, the amount you expected to pay out of pocket for deductibles, co-payments and co-insurance may be much higher or lower than you initially thought.

"Some believed their deductible was $750, that's what was displayed on our shop and compare tool, but those individuals were actually really entitled to a $4,000 deductible. The individuals who saw a $4,000 deductible were entitled to a $750 deductible. It worked both ways."

Out of the 2,000 individuals impacted, Banahan says 300 of them benefited from the miscalculation while 1,700 were disadvantaged.

"We are giving them the option to keep their plan or shop and select another plan."

The healthcare company has since contacted all of the folks who were affected by this to notify them of the changes.

In that notice, individuals will find a toll free number that they can call with questions or if they're interested in switching plans.

If you decide to shop for a new plan, you must enroll in that new plan by December 23.

If you keep your current plan, you're already enrolled for coverage beginning January 1.
