Quarterback Smith out indefinitely after injury

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK Quarterback Maxwell Smith is out indefinitely. Coach Joker Phillips made the announcement Monday during his weekly news conference. He says Smith needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his ankle.

The injury happened during the Cats' first series of Saturday night's game against South Carolina at Commonwealth Stadium. Freshman Jalen Whitlow had to take over the quarterback spot for the rest of the game.

Phillips say Smith's indefinite absence means that highly touted freshman, Patrick Towles, will now have his red-shirt pulled, allowing him to play.

Safety Dakotah Tyler is also out with a torn ACL.
