Reality Check: Fallen officers in 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Marion County Deputy Carl Anthony Rakes, who was shot Wednesday morning after he pulled over a car, is the 109th fallen officer in the United States in 2012.

Deputy Rakes, who was 31, had been with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for six years and served on the Lebanon Police Department prior to becoming a deputy.

According to the website "Officer Down Memorial Page," Rakes is also the fourth fallen officer in Kentucky this year.

Fallen Kentucky officers in 2012: Officer Mark Allen Taulbee, Hodgenville Police Dept., killed in vehicle pursuit on September 16; Chief Herbert Proffitt, Tompkinsville Police Dept., killed August 28 by gunfire; and Deputy James Thacker, Pike County Sheriff's Dept., killed January 23 in automobile accident.

Of the 109 fallen officers nationwide in 2012, 38 involved gunfire.
