Memorial walk to honor fallen firefighters

Updated: Fri 6:42 PM, Jan 04, 2013

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - 20 years later, still on their hearts and minds, firefighters with the Jessamine County fire district will remember two heroes, lost in the line of duty.

Tomorrow, fire fighter Cecil Fain, and Fire Chief Mike Wheeler will be honored for giving the ultimate sacrifice while on an emergency run in 1993.

The twenty years since passed, as well as their time here will be reflected upon while walkers make their way roughly a mile and a half from the old county fire station to the new one.

Cecil Fain's brother, Doug, and Mike Wheeler's son, Gerald, know the importance and significance this walk for the community and their families.

"It reminds them and their families just how important their jobs are, what the community thinks of them even though we may not tell them everyday. And it's kind of like when a service man dies. You're so appreciative of their job and what they're going through even though you don't think about it on a daily basis," said Doug Fain.

"It's a little hard for me to talk about. It's quite emotional just to think its 20 years. In one sense it's, I can't believe it's been 20 years. But then in another sense, it's been a long time," said Mike Wheeler's son, Gerald. Gerald Wheeler is currently an assistant fire chief for Jessamine County Fire.

The walk will end at the new county fire house on south Main Street where there will be a ceremony following.
