Residents react to shooting at Conn. elementary school

NEWTOWN, Conn. (WKYT) - WKYT is learning more tonight about Newtown, Conn., the town of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.

It's about an hour's drive from Hartford, Conn. and New York City. Sandy Hook Elementary is one of four elementary schools in the town. A junior at the University of Kentucky grew up in Newtown. She just returned home for the winter break Thursday. WKYT talked with her Friday afternoon.

"This kind of thing doesn't happen here. We're safe. We're tiny. Everyone knows each other. I've had great friendships here and memories," explains the UK junior, currently at home in Newtown with her family.

"We don't feel right sitting in our house and watching this. We feel like we should be doing something. And I think that's probably the general feeling is that everyone just wants to help. Everyone wants to come together. Everyone wants to hug the parents, and there's nothing you can do."

Parents of Sandy Hook Elementary students hugged their children tight Friday. Many were still in shock. All called Newtown a close community.
