They're designed to make 4th of July celebrations a little less noisy, but a new fireworks ordinance in Lexington isn't going over well with everyone.

The ordinance limits the hours fireworks can be used in the city. Some city workers think it'll be hard to enforce.

"The enforcement thing is going to have to be handled as regular calls for service," explains Commissioner of Public Safety Clay Mason.

Commissioner Mason says officers are still learning how to enforce the new curfews.

"The officers have to see them going off before and see who lights them in most of the incidences."

According to the new city ordinance, people can't set fireworks off after midnight or before 10 a.m. on the 3rd and 4th of July. On any other day of the summer, people must stop setting fireworks off at 10 p.m.

Vendors like Robert Dunham with Patriotic Fireworks doesn't expect the new regulations to affect business.

"I very seriously doubt it'll hurt it too much because everybody wants them and they'll wait for the restrictions to be lifted," says Dunham.

Clara Craig with Phantom Fireworks in Hamburg seems more worried about competition for sales than the new restrictions.

"The profit's gonna be divided among more people. There are more vendors now," she explains.

The city will host special events the next few days to help educate people on the new firework restrictions.
