Road in Hamburg closed due to gas leak

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Roads near the intersection of Alysheba Way and Pink Pigeon Parkway were shut down for most of the day Tuesday after a gas leak. People in the Hamburg area said there was no mistaking the smell.

"Yeah, you can smell it a little," said La-Z-Boy employee Tracey Toney.

"It's that little...back of your throat and you're like, I know what that is, that's gas!" said Lauren Webb, who was driving through the area.

The odor lingered near the intersection from about 10:30 Tuesday morning until they were able to shut down the ruptured line shortly after 5:00 in the afternoon.

"The gas line is marked, so it looks like somebody missed it just a little bit and it was just enough to catch the line," said Lt. Chris Van Brackel of the Lexington Division of Police.

Police say a crew was digging to set up a traffic light when they hit the gas main. That project went to the back burner as gas crews worked to fix the rupture. Because of the breezy conditions, police said the gas escaping from the leak wasn't concentrated enough to be a hazard. Police had several roads blocked and a couple of businesses were inaccessible to customers.

"No business...we've had one customer. Hopefully they get it cleared up soon. As of now, they haven't told us we have to go home. I won't be upset if they do," said Toney.

Lauren Webb was trying to get to class.

"Usually this is my back way. That's why I thought I was going to avoid traffic, but guess not!" said Webb.

Columbia Gas officials said no customers lost service as a result of the rupture.
