Safety concerns may lead to high school closure

INEZ, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky district will consider closing a high school over concerns about the building's structural integrity.

The Martin County School Board will meet Thursday to discuss the future of Sheldon Clark High school. The action comes just before classes are set to resume on Aug. 7.

Board members say there are cracks in the walls and floors that some think are getting worse due to nearby road construction and blasting.

School Board Member Gary Ball says and engineering report says that "if you had a significant seismic wind or blast event the school could possibly collapse."

Superintendent Steven Meadows says if the school is closed, students will be moved to another school.
