LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Lexington Streets and Roads crews say so far this winter they've used up 3/4 of the salt housed in one barn.
On Friday, they restocked the supply.
Crews started out with more than 5,000 tons and were at about 3,500 as of that morning.
It's not just the snow and ice that are posing a challenge.
The subfreezing temperatures have rendered the salt pretty much useless- although there's a solution they can apply that helps the salt stick to the ground.
Rob Allen says there's somewhat of a salt shortage right now.
"There certainly is a big demand this year," said Allen. "We're hearing from a lot of contractors and no, we don't have any salt for sale. They're having trouble finding supplies."
Crews will be out at midnight to deal with the overnight snow threat that goes in to Saturday.
Counties neighboring Fayette are reporting salt shortages.
Woodford, Franklin and Garrard counties are expecting a salt shipment Friday or early next week.
