Scott County sanitation worker injured in crash

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A sanitation worker is injured after a crash.

A worker for Rumpke Waste & Recycling was hit by a driver passing the garbage truck on Sebree Road in Stamping Ground just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The worker was taken to UK Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Rumpke says the driver was out of the truck at the time of the accident.

"I feel so sorry for this guy," said Jason Sexton, a neighbor. "People aren't careful enough. You get in a rush, get behind on your schedule, people gotta slow down on this road."

The speed limit is 25 on this road, but a lot of neighbors say drivers go a lot faster, making for a dangerous situation sometimes.

Rumpke says this is a reminder that motorists sharing the road need to exercise more caution when it comes to sanitation workers.

In 2004, the company initiated the "Slow Down To Get Around" campaign to encourage this after two garbage collectors were hit within weeks of each other.

WKYT contacted the Scott County Sheriff's Office to try and see if anyone's been questioned in connection to the accident.

As of Noon Wednesday, we hadn't heard back from them.
