Scamming panhandler wants his victims to know he's sorry

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- He's admitted to lying, begging, and panhandling, all for a quick buck, but for the very first time, Gary Thompson is apologizing for his actions.

Has he really had a change of heart, or is this just another ploy on Thompson's part?

We've shown you how Gary Thompson made a pretty penny this past year by successfully scamming hundreds of Lexington shoppers out of money.

But he says it wasn't what he led everyone to believe.

"I lied about the 30 to 60 thousand," Thompson told us. "I may have made 30 thousand dollars a year pan-handling."

Now he's admitting what he did, and that his actions were wrong.

"I wanted to apologize to everyone in Lexington for pan-handling like the way I was before," Thompson said.

Thompson said he received a lot of public scrutiny after his hoax was revealed on television, but now he's hoping the public will give him a
second chance.

"After seeing myself on the news being so boastful and people giving me money like that... I shouldn't have been so disrespectful like that and I should have never done that in the first place," Thompson said.

His apology may be too little, too late for anyone who fell for his hoax. But Thompson assures us that his pan-handling days are over.

"I have completely quit panhandling and I've been praying to Jesus," Thompson said. "I've got a few applications in as we speak and I'm trying to get a job in a few places."

For now, we'll just have to wait and see if Thompson really sticks to his story, and stops swindling people out of money.
