School leaders say Russell Cave will re-open Thursday
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)-Fayette County School leaders say an electrical problem at Russell Cave is fixed as of Wednesday afternoon. They saychildren can go back to school Thursday.
Crews out at Russell Cave showed WKYT cameras exactly what they're working on. They say Monday, two wires running from the transformer into the school overheated, causing a power loss to the building. They say they've been working non stop ever since, digging into the new sidewalks out front to dig up the effected area and running new wires into the building.
Mary Wright, the Chief Operating Officer for the school system, says renovations made in the last four years may have been a contributing factor.
"Any time you have those types of major changes, there's a possibility that something may turn up later," Wright said. "I'm not going to say it is directly related, but we feel that there may have been some electrical issues we had not detected that needed to be fixed."
School leaders say it takes about three hours for the building to warm up enough for students to be in class, once the power is restored.
Leaders have not released how they plan to make up for lost instrutional time.
