I-64 bus crash that injured students caught on tape

More Video...

Shelby County, KY (WKYT) - A serious bus crash that brought I-64 to a standstill in Shelby County was caught on tape by a trucker's dashboard camera.

"I was thinking there was a lot of kids hurt, because I knew, because they had passed me earlier and I saw that there was a busload of kids," said Lynn Wehling.

In the video you can see the bus cross all three westbound lanes before crashing into the dividing wall.

"Bus blew a left front tire and swerved to the left really hard and he hit the barrier,' Wehling said.

Jefferson County Schools spokesperson Ben Jackey said the bus was carrying students from Waggener High School in Louisville who had been at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond for a college tour. He said all 42 people on the bus were taken to local hospitals to be checked out.

A spokesperson for U of L Hospital says 12 patients were brought to the facility from the crash. Two of the patients are adults, the remaining ten are students. The youngest victim at U of L Hospital is 15-years-old. Those taken to U of L have injuries ranging from fair to serious, but we're told none are life threatening.

There was a second crash in the eastbound lane at the time of the bus crash. Police believe the driver of that car lost control after seeing the bus swerve toward them.

Traffic backed up almost fifteen miles as police closed the interstate. One lane was reopened around 4pm. All three lanes were opened several hours later.
