LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Fayette County Coroner has now identified a teenager killed in a crash that shutdown a busy Lexington road earlier this week.

The coroner says 19-year-old Joe Lyninger of Georgetown died Tuesday afternoon when he lost control of his Toyota Camry and slammed head-on into a tractor trailer.

The two collided just after 12:30 p.m. on Georgetown Road at Spurr Road. Police had the road closed for hours while they investigated.

"It has a big impact on the school and the neighborhood. It's on a major roadway. It's caused a lot of inconveniences. We have to do that to clear the scene and make sure that we don't miss any information too," says Sgt. Pat Murray with Lexington Police.

Police tell WKYT that the truck was going out Georgetown Road when the car crossed the center line. Investigators are not sure why the driver crossed over into oncoming traffic.

The coroner says Lyninger died of blunt force injuries. Lexington police say the driver of the truck was not injured in the wreck.

Witnesses tell WKYT that there was a slim chance the driver of the car would survive after the crash.

"It's horrible. No way anybody could walk away. I actually ran up and tried to help him. He didn't ever respond. I tried to ask him his name, he didn't say anything," says Scott Marlin, who witnessed the wreck.

Marlin says his heart goes out to the family of the victim, "Be strong. It's a really bad time for this to happen. It's the holidays. Be strong as you can. I'm just so sorry it's just terrible."
