RICHMOND, KY. (WKYT) - Here in the Bluegrass, many people gathered to pray for the victims of Friday's shooting and their families.

In Richmond, a special service was held at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church. While in Georgetown, dozens took part in a vigil at a park.

"Anytime tragedy affects us, there is a need of coming together," said Father Jim Sichko, pastor of St. Mark's.

From hundreds of miles away, Father Sichko led a memorial service for those who were killed while also praying for those affected in the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

"They're going to need that extra strength and that prayer and that extra motivation. And hopefully this and all of the people throughout the world praying for them, they will feel that strength and unity," said Father Sichko.

And over in Scott County, this mother got people together for a candlelight vigil.

"I figure that this is a way that everyone can grieve and let them know that we all feel for them. We can all be connected through this. And we can share and give our prayers to them and let them know that we are here for them," said Rachel Jackson, who organized the vigil.

A couple from Newtown, CT but currently living in Georgetown tearfully shared their story. "Our children were born there. We came here 22 or 23 years ago. And it gave us solace to hear that Georgetown was having a candlelight vigil."

No matter what they did or where they gathered, they were all connected to Connecticut.
