Sex offender charged with trying to kill Russell Co. preacher

RUSSELL SPRINGS, Ky. (WKYT) - Police say they finally caught their suspect, Jerry Brown, running naked in a soybean field after being on the run from them since Sunday night.

Police the incident started Sunday night just before 9:00 p.m. at Laker Billiards. They say Jerry Brown intended to kill Jason C. Collins, a minister who was also working at the pool hall.

"We understand from interviews the weapon malfunctioned or perhaps jammed and in a panic in not being able to get it to function again, that's what caused him to flee," said Russell Springs Chief of Police Joseph Irvin.

Police say the shooting stemmed from domestic problems between the two men and Collins' estranged wife.

"Mr. Brown was involved with conversations with the estranged wife and resulted in him going to the pool hall to get Mr. Collins," said Chief Irvin.

Brown ran from the pool hall and wasn't found until Tuesday morning when police say he stripped naked, stole his neighbor's truck, led police on a chase and finally crashed near a soybean field where he was caught.

"He was absolutely naked and gave us various explanations of why," said Irvin.

Brown is a registered sex offender from South Carolina. The victim was a 13-year-old.

He is in the Russell County Jail charged with attempted murder, theft, fleeing or evading police, wanton endangerment, indecent exposure and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Jail staff says he is under a suicide watch.
