VANCEBURG, Ky. (AP) - A northeastern Kentucky sheriff says out-of-state callers are trying to get money and personal information by telling people they failed to appear for jury duty.
Lewis County Sheriff Johnnie Bivens says multiple residents have complained of receiving phones calls from someone claiming the person was previously selected for jury duty but failed to appear. The caller then says an arrest warrant has been issued.
Bivens told The Ledger Independent the caller will sometimes tell the person that the warrant will be cancelled if they pay with a credit or debit card.
In some instances, the caller will claim the warrant is a mistake and ask for a name, birthdate and Social Security number.
Bivens says people shouldn't send money or give out personal information to individuals or companies they don't know.
