FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - The Franklin County sheriff says Paula Ward left her 9-year-old daughter alone in a hotel pool for 45 minutes while she smoked crack cocaine.

Investigators tell us Ward asked strangers at the Best Western pool on Chenault Road to watch her daughter while she charged her phone about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies say someone at the pool called for help 45 minutes later because Ward was still gone.

Investigators tell us they found her in a hotel room, smoking crack cocaine with a man.

Sheriff Pat Melton says this case hits hard because he's a father.

"It's unacceptable. The sad part about this whole story is that children don't have a choice. Children are stuck there so they don't have choice. So it's up to adults and parent to act responsibly and take care of their kids," said Melton.

Ward is charged with possessing a controlled substance and possessing drug paraphernalia.
