Shots fired after thwarted burglary attempt

Updated: Tue 7:26 PM, Oct 16, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Shots were fired near the American Red Cross building on Newtown Pike after a man reportedly thwarted an attempted burglary.

Jim Green said he noticed a shed behind the Red Cross building was unlocked when he was there to pick up his wife around 2 a.m. Tuesday. When he went to lock it, he said a man started running away.

Green told WKYT he chased the man he saw running away across a fence and then the man got into a truck. He told police he yelled at the man, then someone fired a single shot in his direction. Green said he fired back.

"I just seen the flash and heard the pop. I guess they picked the wrong one to fire the shot at because I shot back. I didn't shoot him, I shot the side of the truck," said Green.

He told police he believed his shot hit the truck the man was driving. He described the truck as cream colored Ford F150.

"He floored it and took off out Newtown. Almost hit a car and truck out there on Newtown and made it on through," said Green.

The Red Cross says that a lawn mower, a leaf blower and a weed wacker were stolen. "It's sad that people would steal from an organization that works so hard to provide for others," explains Winn Stephens with Public Relations for the Red Cross. "It's something that you just can't make sense of however, we're not going to let it slow us down. We're going to continue moving forward and serving the community members that need us."

Police have not made any arrests in connection to the incident.
