LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The sounds of spring are coming to life at Wolf Run Park from kids playing to the sound of a baseball bat making just the right contact, but one sound Wednesday night came out of "left field."

"We had a call of shots fired in the area of the 1000 block of Cross Keys," answered Lt. Jody Stowers of the Lexington Police Department.

That location is just on the other side of the park and was close enough that a little league baseball team had to cut their practice short to get away from the risk.

"A bullet can travel for a large distance and it just shows what a selfish and criminal act that is. To not only shoot at another subject, but to shoot in an area where there are children present," said Lt. Stowers.

According to police, witnesses reported a man inside a car fired at a man on the street, but missed and hit a nearby car, knocking out the windows.

While no one was hurt, the Western Little League is playing it safe. They alerted parents of the shooting and canceled practices at the park, for the time being. The League President didn't want to go on camera, but did tell me they will re-establish practices in a couple of days. Until then they plan to work with the city and police to find a safe solution.

Meanwhile, at the park, a father of a little leaguer says he got the notice, but continued to say in all the time he's come to the park, he's never had anything like this.

"Well, you never know when something is going to happen," warned Lt. Stowers, "but you do have to use caution."

Still, that shooting will now be in the back of their minds even as they get ready to play ball.
