Simulation shows participants poverty realities

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) - The scenario begins with only $10 on hand. The participant has no job, no transportation and must feed the children, pay the rent and make the utility payment. What comes first?

A poverty simulation gave those problems to 65 participants in Elizabethtown.

The News-Enterprise reported the exercise on Friday was organized by Community Collaborations for Children and Central Kentucky Community Action Council.

Those taking part were told to immerse themselves in their assigned roles. By the end of the exercise, several had been theoretically evicted. Some other acknowledged breaking the law to make ends meet.

Stephanie Carwile played a 20-year-old mother. She said she felt out of control and unable to help her family.
