Slush refreezing a big concern for Lexington roads

Updated: Wed 7:33 PM, Mar 06, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - After the snow is gone, the slush remains and while it may look harmless, Lexington road crews are cautioning drivers to be alert. They say as the temperatures drop this may likely refreeze making some main roads slick, but some of the side roads even slicker.

"They were pretty good today, This morning on the way to work the side roads were a little slick, but the main roads were really good," described driver Jenette Woolery.

The side roads could pose a bigger problem, tonight, because salt trucks watch the main roads closely, but say residential streets are often the last to get treated.

"We don't treat every single road in Lexington, we do have a priority system," explained Rob Allen, a manager for the Streets and Roads Department.

Some residents don't need to be told that. They already know what a frozen road can do.

"Today's the first day that it's been clear the day of," said Heather Hobgood, while pointing to her block, "Generally when it snows, it's completely ice from about ten feet from the stop sign all the way down here. It's almost impossible in a rear-wheel drive car to get off this road."

"Usually if it snows, it's probably two or three days that it's kind of bad," adds her neighbor, Woolery.

That's the problem that road crews say could pop up tonight and they say no driver is excused.

"Just because you have an SUV or a four-wheel drive, guess what? You don't get any traction on ice," answered Allen.

So, as drivers head out tonight, they are warned to stay alert because black ice is a real concern as we head into the night.
