WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -- You don't have to look far for signs of a swollen Cumberland River, in Whitley County. After Thursday's snowfall and everything else the weather has thrown at this area, the river could cause problems as it's expected to crest nearly three feet above the flood stage Friday.

"There's a bank right there and it's about 15 feet up on that bank right now. I ain't never seen it this high before. I mean I go down through here quite a bit and I've seen a lot of rain but I've never seen it this high," said Steven Bingham, who Lives by Cumberland River.

Bingham is like many of his neighbors and others in Williamsburg watching the river rise.

"People talk about it and say it's getting bad," said Bingham.

The water has already flooded the banks, closing off walkways along the water's edge, but for Bingham if the water breaks over the flood wall it could mean losing everything he owns.

"If it comes across the flood wall it's going to be in my house," said Bingham. "They say the flood stage is 27 feet and I think it's at it or above it, and it's getting real bad."

This is just the latest weather woe this week for Whitley County. First it was heavy rains, then Thursday, snowfall that gave drivers problems.

"When's it going to stop?" asked Bingham.

Williamsburg city officials and residents say they'll be keeping a close eye on the river in the coming days.
