SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - Trayvon Martin's shooting death garnered worldwide attention in part because of a backlash fueled by social media. Now, social media is permeating virtually every aspect of the trial for the man who shot Martin.

Social media has become inextricably tied to daily life, reflected by its presence in George Zimmerman's murder trial. The trial is a top trend almost daily, with thousands tweeting their thoughts with the hashtag #ZimmermanTrial.

Attorneys are forced to react, as social media is still an unusual facet in a criminal trial. Mary Anne Franks teaches law at the University of Miami, and she says the profession tends to fall behind the rest of the culture. She says attorneys are still trying to figure out how to best use social media to their advantage.
