Somerset man accused of shooting at parents pleads guilty

SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - Anthony Merrick was charged with attempted murder, but he pleaded guilty to two counts of wanton endangerment in exchange for a lesser recommended sentence of 10 years in prison.

“He was drinking and he got mad at his parents,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Eddy Montgomery. That's what prosecutors say fueled the violence between Merrick and his elderly mother and father.

The shootings happened at the couple's home on August 15, 2013.

Merrick told Judge David Tapp he’s had issues with anxiety.

“I’m here to admit my guilt. I put people in danger. Using a firearm,” Merrick said Thursday. He appeared in shackles and chains, wearing an orange Pulaski jail jumpsuit.

“He got a gun out, threatened to kill his parents. And our contention was at some point his mom wrestled with him and disarmed him,” said Montgomery.

The couple escaped the violent scene, but police said Merrick followed them outside where something caused him to collapse on the ground.

“I had been drinking. And I was, taking my medication. I evidently fell. Hit my head, woke up in a pool of blood. Got a firearm, fired it indoors, placing my parents and myself at risk,” Merrick told Judge Tapp.

Merrick was taken to UK Hospital where he was arrested.

Prosecutors said Thursday it was a miracle no one was killed.

Court records show that the Merrick home was riddled with bullet holes and that the shots fired were preceded by him beating the home's walls and kitchen cabinets.
