LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It took nearly three years to build. This weekend, Southland Christian Church will hold its first services in the space once occupied by Lexington Mall.
The new building is 200,000 square feet. It has lots of amenities including movie rooms, classrooms, theater rooms and even an area where children can play during services.
Pastor Chris Hahn tells us the rooms are all equipped with Bible themes children can understand.
"Very dramatic in how they teach and keep kids engaged. A lot of scripture memory songs, teaching, just a lot of fun in this room," Hahn says.
The main room, the sanctuary, is large enough to seat 2,000 people.
Between the Richmond Road location and Southland's other campuses, it is estimated the church will have 16,000 members.
Pastor Hahn shrugs off criticism over the size of the church.
"You know, people are going to say what they will," Hahn says. "It's kind of funny, some of the comments they say about us. We don't let the criticism kind of detour us or cause us to make different decisions. We are going to stay on task with what God calls us to do. Heaven's going to be filled with a lot of people."
The first service at the Richmond Road campus will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
