Starting the gun control debate

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate is expected next week to consider a proposal to expand required federal background checks for gun purchases at shows and online.

Senators on Thursday cleared the way for debate on the Democratic legislation.

Most Republican senators and many moderate Democrats oppose or are wary of curbs they think go too far, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says debate could go on for weeks.
