State cutbacks impact youth sports in Lexington

Updated: Thu 7:20 PM, Dec 06, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - Cutbacks at the state level are having a big impact on an organization in Lexington.

Leaders with the Lexington Youth Soccer Association say this is the first year they've had to pay for background checks for coaches and volunteers. Previously the state did the checks for free but organizers say once they started charging they looked elsewhere.

With each check costing $26.95 and more than 300 coaches and volunteers this last season they spent thousands.

Organizers say the expense is a big one, but it's worth paying to ensure that every person dealing with children is safe.

"We don't want to be in that situation. The probability of something happening is very low but when it does it's very bad," said Ed Pavlik with LYSA.

Pavlik says he hopes they don't have to pass the cost on to parents but it's something that may have to be done in the future.

The new background checks search state and national records, as well as the sex offender database. Coaches and volunteers have the option of paying for their own background check.
