FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Department of Revenue has fielded up to 1,000 calls a day in the final week of Kentucky's amnesty offer to delinquent taxpayers.
The rising interest has prompted the Department of Revenue to extend operating hours at 10 field offices around the state.
Finance Secretary Lori Flanery said the response to the tax amnesty offer has been strong since it began on Oct. 1. But she said this week will trump all others because the offer expires on Friday.
Kentucky hopes to generate more than $60 million through the amnesty offer that allows delinquent taxpayers to avoid prosecution if they pay up.
The amnesty offer is intended to help balance a two-year, $19 billion budget that mandated 8.4 percent cuts to most state agencies and programs.
