State to consider takeover of Monticello schools

Updated: Wed 10:02 AM, Feb 20, 2013

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The state Board of Education is on the brink of deciding whether to take over management of the financially troubled Monticello Independent school district.

The board is holding a special meeting in Frankfort on Wednesday to vote on the issue. The district waived its right to hearing on the possible takeover that had originally been set for Wednesday, and instead board members will make a presentation at the meeting.

In agenda documents, the state says the southern Kentucky district will become insolvent and shut down by Feb. 27 if the state does not step in. The district is made up of an elementary school, a middle school and a high school with a total of 750 students and 128 employees, of which 68 are teachers.

The state has been working with the district since November to address the problems.
