State trying to return money to rightful owners

Updated: Wed 12:43 AM, Apr 25, 2012

The state's trying to find thousands of people to whom they owe millions of dollars. And they're starting their search Wednesday in Scott County.

Talk to Scott County Judge-Executive George Lusby, and he'll tell you unclaimed cash can be found almost anywhere.

"Maybe you had a tax refund, it got lost," he says, "it could be somebody that died 50 years ago and had an insurance policy, and nobody claimed it. Or maybe they died and money was in the bank and nobody knew about it. A lot of different places."

In Scott County alone, there's $1.4 million the state wants to return to its rightful owners. They'll start contacting those owners Wednesday.

"We're gonna have a group of volunteers that are gonna go through the list. There's hundreds of people, and if they know a person then they're gonna call them and tell them to come by the courthouse and sign up to get their unclaimed money," explains Lusby.

If you'd like to stop by the Scott County Courthouse to see if the state owes you money you can from 10 a.m to 2 p.m Wednesday. State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach and volunteers will be working on the third floor of the building. They are willing to answer any questions about unclaimed funds.

They are also encouraging people to check online for unclaimed money. You can visit the Kentucky State Treasury's Unclaimed Property Search database at the following address:
