Somerset will no longer be Kentucky's largest dry city.

On Tuesday, voters in the Pulaski County city approved alcohol sales.

Officials tell us the final count is 2,167 "yes" votes, and 1,464 "no" votes.

Many people think of Lake Cumberland..when you talk about Somerset.

“You have to think we are truly a tourist town,” said David Weddle of the “Vote Yes To Progress” grass-roots organization, which has worked since late spring to bring boos to the Pulaski County seat.

Weddle says many tell him something is missing in the quaint community that attracts millions every year to its pristine recreational waters.

“And by offering alcohol we can maximize revenue, and dining options,” he said.

So on Tuesday that question was in the hands of the city’s 8,000 registered voters.

“It’s a nice town now..a good place to live, and it doesn’t have alcohol, so why change it?” asked Wendall Johnson, who said he was going to vote “no.”

“I feel like it’s going to help the community grow and prevent people from driving long distances to purchase alcohol and then drinking and driving on the road,” said Robin Johnson, who voted “yes.’

It has been more than 8 decades since a drop of legal liquor flowed in the town. The last referendum was held in 2001, when alcohol was defeated. Burnside adopted restaurant only sales in May 2004.

Supporters believe they can turn the tide this time.

“And we are looking at probably more than 50% turnout….which would be large in an election like this,” said Weddle.

But people against alcohol argue it’s only going to lead to more problems..and work for the local police.

“Break ins..stealing, car break ins,” said alcohol opponent Naomi Darnell.
