Stomach virus causes dip in attendance

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - One Lexington school is dealing with a wave of illness.

The spokeswoman for Fayette County Schools tells WKYT that 120 students were absent from Lansdowne Elementary School on Friday. That means attendance for the school was at 84%.

"It's slightly unusual to see the number that we've seen at Lansdowne but not uncommon for illness to hit a school like this illness, it's quick lived and students are back to normal soon," said Michelle Marra, District Health Coordinator for Fayette County Schools.

Multiple students got sick with a stomach related illness. School officials say they first noticed on Thursday, when a lot of students got sick. They say it got worse on Friday.

School officials say they consider closing a school until attendance gets around 80%.

"Our main concern is for the safety of the students and as long as we have adequate numbers of staff that are able to be there and for education to continue to happen we will certainly make sure we're doing that," said Marra.

WKYT checked with other school systems across region. So far, none have reported any issues with sickness.
