Store raided for allegedly selling bath salts

Updated: Wed 11:46 PM, Jul 11, 2012

Lexington police created quite the scene, as narcotic agents raided the Six Brothers Market, on West Sixth Street, this afternoon. Officers carried out a cardboard box with evidence after they say they found bath salts stocked inside the store.

One customer pulled up during the raid, and I asked if she knew the store was selling bath salts. She responded, "I don't know what that stuff is. Is that the stuff that makes you into a vampire?"

Not quite.

Officers did explain that the product is potentially dangerous. If abused the salts can act like a synthetic drug similar to meth or cocaine.

"Oh, that scares me. I don't like that stuff," reacted the customer after hearing the explanation.

While this customer wasn't aware of the bath salts, she did know the store to sell other things.

"Food, I think they sell 'Serenity.'" When asked to clarify, she answered, "Weed."

This is the third search of this store this year. Police say the first search in January was done by consent. The next two, including today's search, were carried out with a warrant.

The search in June closed the store down, but only for it to open a few days later. This time police were hopeful to keep it shut down.

During the raid, other store patrons stood waiting, wondering if they could shop inside again. I asked them questions about the store, but they were not eager to help with any information. When the store operator, Saed Qadah, was walked out in handcuffs, they became even more protective with one person attempting to grab and cover our camera.

Qadah is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and trafficking a controlled substance within a thousand yards of a school. Police say this long standing investigation will continue.
