Street renamed in honor of fallen police officer
Seven months after being killed in the line of duty, a fallen Lexington Police officer receives a special honor. A Lexington street was renamed for Officer Bryan Durman Tuesday. Hilo Street is now called Durman Drive. It's the street that leads up to the Central Sector, where Lexington police officers check in each day.
A hit-and-run driver killed Officer Durman in April. He had been responding to a noise complaint at the intersection of North Limestone and Alabama. Members of Officer Durman's family were on hand Tuesday for the renaming ceremony.
"It's wonderful, it's even greater because it comes right before the holidays and it's a hard time for us anyway as we go through our first holiday season without Bryan," Brandy Durman, Officer Durman's widow, said.
"It's overwhelming. It's very emotional, but we appreciate everything so much," Margaret Durman, Officer Durman's mother, said.
