Strip mall in Richmond catches fire

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - We're tracking the investigation into a fire at a Richmond strip mall. It happened just after 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Southern Hills Plaza, just off the Eastern Bypass. Richmond firefighters say the fire started inside an old carpet store that has been closed for awhile. When they arrived, they say smoke was pouring out of the building. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to neighboring businesses.

"We know where it started. It started kind of in the center of the building. But as far as any cause, we don't have any idea," says Chief Buzzy Campbell with the Richmond Fire Department.

Firefighters say it took them about half an hour to put the fire out. At this point, they do not think it's suspicious.
