LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Don Stephens has worked as a crossing guard for two years, helping kids and their parents safely cross Lexington intersections.
On Friday morning he was doing just that when, he says, a car ran a red light at Lansdowne and Redding Road.
"He couldn't have been paying attention as much was going on, red light, flashlight and the stop sign," Stephen says. "I thought he was gonna hit us all. It was a mother, two kids and myself. My first thought was try to grab the child and get out of the way, but I didn't have time."
Police say a 17-year-old driver hit a six-year-old boy in the crosswalk in front of Lansdowne Elementary. First responders told us the child appeared to have a leg injury, but should be okay.
It's still left everyone involved shaken.
"Makes me wonder if I'm doing my job right. I had my flashlight, stop sign and a whistle. That's all I was armed with. I used them all but he just kept coming."
Police tell us the investigation is still ongoing and the driver will likely face charges.
