Students call for UK athletics to cut ties to coal

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A group of University of Kentucky students are calling on the athletics program to cut financial ties to coal, calling mining a harmful industry.

Students, alumni and supporters have scheduled a rally for noon EDT Wednesday at the free speech area of the UK campus to press the administration on the issue.

UK student Sam Beavin said in a statement that the administration has banned sponsorships from tobacco and alcohol companies and that coal should be blacklisted, too.

After the rally, students will march to the Wildcat Coal Lodge to deliver hundreds of petitions and inhalers stuffed with personalized notes.
