Students came together Saturday, August 18, to help two families in need.
"Raise the Roof" was the first large scale project put on by the Perry County Youth Leadership and Philanthropy Initiative.
The initiative is a partnership between the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and the 4H extension office.
“The goal is to bring together youth from each of our county highs and to teach them leadership skills,” said Robin Gabbard, Assistant Executive Director.
Students have been building a home for the past two weekends.
The group teamed up with the Perry County Housing Development Alliance for the build.
"It was a natural fit to work with the build alliance, and let these kids do a special project but have someone’s success in the past lead and guide them," said Gabbard.
So many students volunteered Saturday that they began work on a second house.
“They've been working for the last six months; putting this project together, learning how you go about planning a special event, getting sponsors for it and including media,” said Gabbard.
