Sun to return despite soggy Saturday start

Our weekend is off to a soggy start with showers bringing heavy rain and some thunder to the Commonwealth Saturday morning. As of 5:00 am, some areas between Frankfort and Shelbyville have already picked up between 1.5” to 2.5” of rain, with a few isolated patches of 3”.

The line of showers is ushering in a cold front that continues to sweep into central Kentucky Saturday morning. Once it passes, rain should clear out fairly quickly, with most of the cloud cover following soon. By lunch time most areas in central and western Kentucky will be clear of the rain, but the further east you are, the longer it will stick around into the early afternoon hours.

Temperatures this afternoon will pick up once the sun comes back out, so areas in the east should stay a bit cooler than those of us in the central and western zones.

Bottom line, don’t cancel any of your afternoon outdoor plans. Once the showers are gone, they should stay that way, with a mix of clouds and sun along with highs in the low 70s.

Sunday marks the official start to Fall and comes with a blast of much cooler air! Highs will top out in the upper 60s. Just to compare, the normal high for this time of year is around 77, so we will be just shy of 10 degrees below average.

Enjoy your weekend!
