Sunny days, warmer weather easing snow woes

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) - A sunny weekend and warmer temperatures will help ease driving conditions in eastern Kentucky where snowfall caused problems.

In the commonwealth's southeastern corner, Kevin Barnett of the Bell County road department told WYMT-TV in Hazard that school buses had to pull off of roads Thursday afternoon and wait for salt trucks to improve traction. Six school buses needed help, but all students got home safely.

There were numerous wrecks and stuck vehicles. Barnett said several tractor-trailer rigs were stuck on Log Mountain.

Cars sliding at the entrances to Cumberland Gap Tunnel backed up traffic.

The National Weather Service said highs around 40 on Friday would help melt the snow and ice. Sunshine was predicted for the weekend.

Forecasters also said streams that were running high from rainfall would begin receding.
