LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - He is one of the most recognized faces at Dunbar High School. "He is incredibly popular and such a leader for students here," explains Dunbar High School Principal Betsy Rains,
"the mood here is really somber, it's almost as if it is not real."
Travis Gaines, a member of the Dunbar High School baseball team, and a leader of the Dog Pound, was paralyzed from the waist down after diving into the ocen and injuring his neck in Florida. "The students were there for the annual baseball tournament we play in. They were there with their families, it was a difficult experience overall as you can imagine."
Since news of Gaines's injury, many local organizations and schools have stepped up to help. "We've had people from other states call us as well and reach out to help Travis, it is so humbling to see the out pour of support and love."
Gaines, who was just a month shy of graduating, was planning on continuing his baseball career at Centre College.
"It's a tough time right now for the team especially. They want to play but they also want to be there for Travis," explains Rains, "but Travis wants them to play so it's a tough time right now."
We're told the team is scheduled to play on Tuesday. They say they will have Travis on their mind and in their hearts.
