LEBANON, Ky. (WKYT) - We're learning more about a man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy.

State Police say Dewayne Shipp shot and killed Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Rakes during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning.

Shipp is charged with murder and is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the University of Louisville hospital.

Shipp is from McDaniels in Breckinridge County.

We learned he lived in Stanford at one time. In 1995, he was charged with bail jumping there. Court records also show that a woman on Portman Avenue accused him of menacing that same year. The citation stated that the woman feared Shipp would hurt her. It was an allegation Shipp eventually pleaded guilty to and paid a fine.

The Marion County Judicial Center shows a number of different charges against Shipp. They include theft and persistent felony offender charges in 1997, some of which were dropped. He also faced wanton endangerment and criminal mischief charges in 2002, which were dismissed.

In 2002, the Marion County Sheriff's Office charged Shipp with alcohol intoxication. Just last year, the same sheriff's department charged him with DUI following an accident.
