LANCASTER, Ky. (WKYT)- Dozens of recently rescued dogs are sitting in the Garrard County Animal Shelter looking for help. They were seized from a suspected puppy mill.

"They were in real bad shape," explained shelter volunteer Brittany Collins, as she cleaned cages. "Teeth problems, ear infections, we got it done."

Collins has spent hours working with the dogs, donating her help to the small shelter and her love to the 45 neglected dogs. Animal control officers joined sheriff's deputies at a home near Lancaster Monday after someone called police. Most of the dogs are chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers. All were found in filthy conditions with no fresh water and stacked in kennels.

"A lot of them have been adopted, but we we have a lot that still need homes, like the senior dogs, we just need some love in their last few years. I'm hoping people will step up and give them great homes," Collins said.

As volunteers continue to help these dogs, they still need donations like dog food, cleaning supplies and money.

"They are doing a lot better since they got here."

Collins says taking care of these seized animals has put a strain on the resources the shelter has and she's hoping folks won't limit their adoption options to just the ones taken from he suspected mill.

"I think we have 35 in the back. I wish people would look at them, too. They're all great dogs."

You can send donations to the Garrard county judge-executive's office at the courthouse, 15 Public Square, Lancaster.
