Teen arrested for texting nude photos of underage girl

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - He was a standout on the basketball court for Letcher Central High School just a year ago, but now Koree Stewart is in the spotlight after being arrested for child porn charges.

"On December the 7th, I received a call from the County Attorney's office involving some pictures of young ladies that might be inappropriate," said Deputy Bert Slone of the Letcher County Sheriff's Office.

Stewart is accused of texting nude photos of at least one underage girl. The investigation started after the girl's parents called the Letcher County Attorney's office to complain of the photos being spread. Investigators then used a search warrant to look at the 19-year-old's phone, and they say they found multiple photos of minors in a sexual performance.

"They are looking at one to five years in prison and potentially being labeled a sex offender for the rest of their life," explained County Attorney Jamie Hatton of the severity of the charges.

The Kentucky State Police offers this warning to teens, once you take a photo like these you can never guarantee it will go away.

"We call it the pebble in the water effect. Once it goes out you really can't get it back," stated Trooper Michael Webb.

It's a growing problem explains the State Trooper.

"The involvement of minors in electronic means has increased greatly and we are unfortunately seeing more cases of that."

In Kentucky, the age of consent for sex is 16, but Trooper Webb says that doesn't carry over to electronic media. Meaning if you take the photo or share the photo, even if it's of yourself, as long as the picture is of someone under 18, it's illegal!

"It's so quick to take a photograph with your smartphone and send that quickly. We want them to think that can have long lasting ramifications for the rest of their life," said Trooper Webb.

Stewart plead not guilty and has already been released from jail. For now, he's under house arrest and not allowed to use a cell phone or social media. The teen declined to comment.

Investigators say more arrests and charges are possible.
