MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - We are learning more about a 14-year-old boy hit and killed by a train Saturday afternoon in Madison County.

Investigators say Andy Byrd was walking along the tracks near his home off Highway 388 when a CSX train turned a corner and struck the teen.

A student at B. Michael Caudill Middle School in Madison County, Byrd is from Wolfe County, but for the last year has been living with his grandparents in the Richmond area.

"It's just like a bad dream that you aren't waking up from," his grandmother, Connie Byrd said. "To think that he went out this way."

His grandmother tells WKYT her grandson spent most of his time outside and was hard-of-hearing, possibly playing a role in the deadly accident.

According to investigators the teen had his back to the train and may not have heard it in time.

"And you know you're always worrying about kids and you think somethings going to happen, but you don't t think anything like this will ever happen," she said.

Andy's friends and classmates plan to wear the colors blue & red at school on Monday in memory of him. School officials say they plan to have grief counselors available for both students and staff.

While arrangements are still pending, the family says they plan to hold Andy's visitation and funeral at Porter & Son Funeral Directors in Campton.
