BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - They see it happen to other parents, and pray it never happens to them.
'I just hope no parent goes through what I'm going through," said the Shawn Smith, Sr. the father of 17 year old Shawn Smith, Jr. who died early Saturday morning in a crash.
Smith, a young father himself, died after police say the Pontiac G6 he was driving ran off Turkey Creek road and slammed into an embankment. The impact caused the car to burst into flames.
"I mean he burnt up in that car and I don't get to hug him or touch him one last time. That's what makes it so hard," said Smith.
Smith says his son was with a bunch of friends coming to his house when something caused them to leave the road. Police say it's still under investigation. The teenager leaves behind a 3 month old son.
"Meant the world to him. That's what hurts me too. Leaving so quick. Don't really get to know him, but I hope he does one of these days," said Smith.
Knox County Board of Education officials say that Smith was a senior at a high school in the Knox County system, where grief counselors helped classmates Monday.
Smith's funeral has been set for 1pm Thursday at Hampton Funeral Home.
