LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Megan Jackson was just six when nearly 3,000 people died on 9/11. Even at that young age, she said she'll never forget it and that's the message behind her memorial in downtown Lexington.

"A lot of people went into those buildings and they didn't know it was their last day," she said.

Now 17, Megan wants to keep the memories of 9/11 alive. She's organized a project to plant 2,977 American flags in the ground at CentrePointe.

"I just really want to honor those people. I think we forget so easily the ones that died and I think we really need to remember them," said said.

She feels so strongly that she spent nearly $400 of babysitting money to buy 3,000 American flags. An engineering friend drew up a grid to arrange the flags. As Megan and her grandmother got to work, bystanders felt compelled to get involved.

"We were up in my office and saw this and figured out what they were doing and it looked like it was a good cause and they needed some help, so here we are," said Ned Wertz.

Lexington firefighters also helped out. They were impressed with the teen's commitment to honor the victims.

"To take it upon herself is amazing, I mean it's outstanding. My hat's off to her," said Captain Arthur Ashley.

He said pushing each flag into the ground was an emotional experience.

"Every time you put a flag in...you kind of think, who is this for? Who was this person? Where were they at? What was going on?" he said.

Megan said she expected her memorial to stay up for a couple of days. She'd like to see a permanent memorial built in Lexington.
