LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A text message from a surveillance system is being credited for helping police catch two burglars.
Todd Sims, the owner of Equipment Sales and Rentals, which is off Bizzell Drive, says he got a text around 3:50 AM.
"My phone went off and when I looked it was from the alarm system," explains Sims, "I immediately went online and signed on to look at the remote cameras and saw what was happening."
What he saw were two men, who police identify as Christopher Risen and Bennett Rayburn, stealing one of their trailers and loading them with their lawn mowers. "I jumped into my car and brought my iPad, where I tracked everything that was going on."
Sims says when he noticed the thieves were leaving he immediately called police. "I was able to give them a play by play of what was going on and where they were going. I was hoping they were going to get there soon or I was going to have to do something. Then, the next thing I knew, there were five cruisers surrounding their pick up truck and my cruiser. It was such a big sigh of relief because at that point it was me stopping them. Big sigh of relief."
We're told that Risen and Bennett are in the Fayette County Detention Center.
