LEXINGTON Ky. (WKYT) - A special canine and his owner visited several inpatients at a Lexington medical center Thursday, to help with the healing process.
Clyde and his owner, Ellen, are part of a pet therapy program that uses dogs and other animals to help people cope and recover from various health problems. The dogs are used to treat everything from mental health disorders to heart disease and even cancer. Physicians claim the program helps give patients a boost in their social, emotional, and cognitive functions.
More and more people are catching on to the positive benefits of pet therapy, especially when used to help ease grief and stress. Therapy dogs were brought in after the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut to help children dealing with emotional trauma after the incident.
Clyde visits inpatients at the U.K. Markey Cancer Center every Thursday, working through the U.K. Health Center volunteer office.
